me: we should recognize that npd is a mental illness that causes those diagnosed with it genuine distress-
person without listening skills: so you’re sympathizing with abusers, right? is that what you’re trying to say? huh??
my point is that we need to separate the label from descriptors of abusers. yes, some abusers have narcissistic traits, but not everyone who experiences them is abusive. there are those with npd who actively seek out help and work on themselves, but stigma is one barrier to treatment to many. perhaps if we were not so eager to throw the term narc or narcissist and those who hurt us we could break down some of those barriers.
this post is NOT trying to excuse abusive actions, and finding a term that describes what you endured can be helpful. but i just urge those reading this post not to arm chair diagnose people with npd, particularly when it comes to online drama.
Narcissistic is NOT an insult it is an HONEST TO GOD DIAGNOSIS and people need to respect that.
